Sri Nikumbini Devi Temple

This place is very cool and very spiritual.

Sri Nikumbini Devi Temple Sanaba, Karnataka Nakumbini, the powerful goddess of Tannur, is locally known as Kumbalaammanam or Kumbala Devi. The Temple is located on the road from Pandavpura to Thonnur lake and as it is right on the main road one can’t miss it. It is at the beginning of the road to Thonnur lake before the Ramanujacharya statue. It is recently renovated and had a fresh coat of paint when we visited. Devotees throng to the temple on Fridays, Tuesdays, and Purnima new moon days to worship the deity. They conduct many rituals and even cook food and offer to the deity. Rooms are available adjacent to the temple for cooking food. As per mythology Indrajeet who was a master of war was a great devotee of Nikumbini Devi. He prayed to Goddess Nikumbini and attained great power. Devi granted him the boon that whenever he completed the rituals of Nikumbini Devi and go to war, he will not be killed in the war. However if the rituals was stopped in between because of hindrances then the boon will become ineffective and it meant that his death is near. Indrajeet had one more boon that only such a person will be able to kill him, who had spent life in forests for 13 years and was able to overcome sleep in those 13 years. Indrajeet started doing Nikumbini Yagna, which was interrupted by Lakshmana. So, due to this the next Battle for Indrajeet became deadly. Frustrated by interruption of Yagna, Indrajeet used the triashtra one by one on Lakshmana. But those astras did not harm Lakshmana. Then, Indrajeet realised that his death is in front him. She is supposed to be a powerful deity by the locals. There are a few temples in the same area which were in different stages of construction. The temple is located in a scenic surrounding with the main road on one side and sugarcane fields on another side. There is a small temple tank in the compound. The Goddess is shown riding a horse on the alcove atop the temple. There is a granite pillar lamp post in front of the temple.
