The Parakrama Samudraya in Polonnaruwa is an excellent irrigation work done by King Parakramabahu the Great. The Parakrama Samudra was built by combining the three former tanks - Topa Wewa, Dumutulu Wewa and Eramudu Wewa - in the area of the present Parakrama Samudra. The Akasa River was constructed by crossing a dam in the Amban Ganga Angamadilla area to bring water to the Parakrama Samudraya. The anicut built at Angamadilla crossing the main tributary of the Mahaweli River, the Anakada Ganga, provides water to the Parakrama Samudra by the water of the Giritale Tank and the water flowing through the Thambalawewa and Kadawalawewa. The reservoir is fed by several canals flowing from the Sudukanda catchment.
Parakrama Samudraya is made up of 7 lakes altogether. It can be witnessed on the way to the Potu Gal Viharaya, which is also a famous historical place in Polonnaruwa. On the bank of the lake is also an outdoor gym open to anyone at anytime which gives an excellent view of the lake whilst working out.

Biggest Tank in polonnaruwa. Build by king Parakramabahu in Polonnaruwa era. So many bath places around the lake. Amazing ancient contribution.
Nice place for a bath. Sunset was amazing. This is a very ancient lake built by Sinhala ancestors about 1000 years ago. King Parakramabahu built this one large lake combining 5 lakes. Its called samudra(sea) because of its size.
