Ella Rock is one of the most popular hiking destinations in Ella amongst the most interesting places to visit in Ella. A three-hour easy trek will take you further into the luxuriantly dense forested countryside of Ella attractions. During the trek up till the rock, you will see beautiful tea plantations and get a chance to interact with the tea planters. Once atop the rock, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the morning sun rising from behind the lush hills. You will get a bird’s eye view of the scenic valleys rolling for miles. Travellers love to spend some quiet time in peace atop the rock in this popular tourist place in Ella. Location: Wellawaya-Ella-Kumbalwela highway, Ella Timings: The best time for this hike is early morning around 5:30 am Price: LKR 3,800, INR 1,500

You can get to the Ella Rock viewpoint from here, but it can be a bit confusing. When you drop down to the tracks, go left for 20 metres, then follow the path and signs through rice fields. Eventually you climb a hill, following the most main path you'll head away from the mountain, and get to a small home (an old man here lead us up the hill and bushwhacked until we hit the main trail, but it was a big waste of time other than the fact that he was very nice).where it looks like the path dies. Go behind the up the hill behind the house, turn left, and head up and over the hill. Next you hit a T-junction, go right and you're on the main path everyone else is on.

Great walk from town along the train tracks then a good hike up to the summit. The sign at the bottom indicates a preferred rout but dont bother with it - or at least following the arrows shown. Make your way towards mile marker 166-1/4 along the tracks (past the first foot bridge and shrine). Just before the mile marker turn left, go over the small bridge towards a couple of wood shacks. Stay to the right of the shacks and head up the hill from there. Keep heading towards the summit and cross a wider trail (road), keep left. Easy peasy from there. See photo of map for best rout. If a local tells you differently and leads/shows you the way, they will eventually ask for money for guide services. As we were told “happy pay”: if you happy you pay but if you pay not enough its not good. They make you feel cheap for a service you didn’t ask for. Would be different if they told you from the beginning not 20 minutes into the trail.
