Meaning The archeological zone is named after being located on the grounds of the old Rancho El Grillo. Cultural Importance This area is located within the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, in the municipality of Zapopan. The importance of this consists in its structures that are a typical example of the Late Classic land architecture in the Atemajac valley, as well as an important number of rectangular box tombs found in the neighboring subdivision of Tabachines, which are date for between 500 to 800 d. C. The findings at the El Grillo site have led to the definition of a chronological phase of the Atemajac Valley: The El Grillo Phase, after the Tabachines Phase with a tradition of shooting tombs. Chronology: 500 d. C. to 900 d. C.
