Delightful surprise after traveling a far-piece off the main drag from Celestun to Merida. This abandoned Hacienda is located in the center of an ancient Mayan town and is always open to the public (no doors, locks or admission cost). Other than local kids playing soccer on the grounds, we had the place to ourselves. I was torn between wanting to rescue and renovate the estate and conversely loving the fact that it's an open space, utilized by the locals. Wish I had known more of the history before visiting the town. (Please read internet source "A Potemkin Village for Porfirio Díaz" by theyucatantimes. com and Wikipedia's Chunchucmil Mayan history concerning the ruins in the area) Its a long desolate drive to this small village, but if you are an off-the-beaten-track sort of traveler, this excursion is for you !!!
