According to the popular traditions of Cuautla, Jalisco, the four monoliths of Las Águilas, served as an astronomical observatory in pre-Hispanic times, being carved by the pre-Hispanic inhabitants of the area. However, they are actually curious geological forms (volcanic and metamorphic). These natural formations were used as an enclosure for ceremonial use exclusively, as evidenced by the xical numbers or pocitos that the natives carved. An indication of its ritual value is in the solar alignment during the equinox that can be seen between the monoliths. Its name derives from the abundance of birds of prey that nest in the area, and it is probably there that the current place name of the municipality comes (Cuauhtlan or place of the Eagles). A true natural and cultural gem of the southwest of Jalisco.
