Convento San Santiago

The Ex-Convent of Santiago, one of the oldest Franciscan convents in Mexico erected in the sixteenth century around 1554 and finished, according to an inscription in the interior apse, in 1569. Due to some disputes that the Franciscan friars had with episcopal authority , these left the convent a century later and since then, the place was abandoned. The church is of Renaissance style and basilica floor. It is believed that the architect of this convent was Claudio de Arciniega, who also drew the cathedral of Mexico. The facade has two levels and a triangular top. On the right side there is a bell tower that abuts the former convent of Santiago Apóstol. At some point it had a wooden roof but a hypothesis of Manuel Toussaint indicates that it was removed by General Calixto Mendoza to make a bullring.
