View over IJsselmeer and Gaasterland on the other side.

Rotterdam was bombed on May 14, 1940. The debris had to be removed. Inland vessels transported it to the Noordoostpolder, among others. Although the dike was already completed, a lot of rubble was still needed to strengthen the inside of the dike and various polder roads. Because the rubble was used in (and near) this kink of the dike, the polder workers gave this corner the name "Rotterdam corner". "This so that no one would ever forget where the rubble came from."
