Nice place but bloody expensive. 12 euro for ONE panncake and a small glass of still water.

The Bourtange fortress mill towers over all other buildings on its bastion. In 1619 a post mill was built on the northernmost bastion for grinding and peeling (separating the chaff from the grain) of corn. This original mill was moved to the village of Ter Haar in 1832, where it still stands. During the reconstruction of the fortress, a copy of the mill was built in 1980, which is still regularly operated by a volunteer miller.

Nice fortress to spend a few hours. But the authenticity fades into the background due to all kinds of freight traffic (!) During the day. That could be a bit smarter. And a bee plague on the terraces did not make the visit any more enjoyable ...

Very nice place with an interesting history. We made a short trip from Papenburg to Bourtange, very easy and quick to get to, and well signposted. I think it's great that no entrance fee has to be paid for the fortress. There are very nice shops and cafes inside. Definitely worth a visit for young and old. Really very nice there.
