Previously there was another church on this site, but it was set on fire in 1591 by the Geuzen and after the reformation the church belonged to the Protestants. After August 3, 1645, the church was abandoned and on March 30, 1797, the church was taken back into use by the Catholics, but because the church was so dilapidated it was demolished. The current church was built in 1892 and has been a national monument since 1978.
