The best preserved monument in Morąg.
Michał Olczak (12/29/2019)
The Gothic town hall (fourteenth century) is one of the most important monuments of Morąg. Despite numerous fires and reconstructions, it has retained its medieval character. Is one of several examples of this type of building in the lands of Warmia and Mazury. The rectangular body of a brick masonry building with two highly fragmented gables is topped with a roof with a slender clock tower. In front of the town hall in the center of the town are two powerful cannons - the symbol of the city and its tourist attraction. The guns were cast in 1864 in Belgian Liege. They were one of many cannons used by the French army during the war with Prussia, which broke out in 1870. Good weapons, however, did not help the French, soon the guns were captured by the enemy. The commanders of the victorious Prussian army decided to use excess weapons as monuments. Morąg was one of the cities where the French guns hit. Cannons have participated in the city's life for over a hundred years. After World War II, they were aimed east. Apparently they were the only barrels in Poland directed in this direction. The last battle with respectable monuments took place in 1998. On two trucks, they were transported to the capital to support the husbandmen demanding the reactivation of the poviat. Apparently, upon hearing of artillery coming to the Office of the Council of Ministers, special services were put on standby. Unfortunately, this time the guns did not bring victory.
