The temple was originally located in the "old Tanners", near the Church of the Intercession "under the mountain." In 1797, it was transferred according to the first general plan of Kaluga in 1778 by architect P.R. Nikitina. Many private tanneries and factories, numbering more than 15, were transferred to this place. This was reflected in the name of the temple. The construction was carried out under the guidance of the provincial architect I.D. Yasnygin, who replaced P.R. Nikitin in 1785 In 1834, already under the leadership of the provincial architect N.F. Sokolova, instead of the previous small meal, a new, more extensive one was added to the temple. In the same year, a three-tier bell tower was built. Until the 1880s the bell tower stood separately from the temple, later was attached. In 1895 the temple was surrounded by a fence. Three-altered temple. The main throne was consecrated in honor of the Nativity of Christ, the chapels - in the name of the Icon of the Mother of God “Joy of All Who Sorrow” and in the name of the Monks Zosima and Savvatiy of Solovetsky. The walls were covered with paintings, rare for Kaluga, on apocalyptic themes, at the moment it is completely lost. In the winter of 1941, during the liberation of Kaluga from German troops, the bell tower was partially destroyed and the southern facades of the temple were damaged. After the war, for almost 20 years, the temple building was empty. In the 1960s it was used by the regional trade department for a salt warehouse. Without the authorization of the city authorities, a gate was opened in place of two windows for cars to enter, and the floor was paved. Until 1975, the temple building was not included in the list of historical and cultural monuments. Only in 1975-1977. it was seriously examined by a group of Moscow experts, but the situation did not change. By a decision of the city executive committee of October 14, 1987, the temple was transferred to the balance of the Kaluga telegraph equipment factory. In 1988, a project for its reconstruction was developed. In accordance with this project, the temple building was planned to be adapted for an entertainment complex with a cafe and a disco hall, a puppet theater, a video salon and an exhibition hall. The entrance to it was projected through the built-in underground part from the southern facade of the temple. The project was never implemented. On January 20, 1997, in accordance with the decision of the Legislative Assembly of the Kaluga Region, the church was transferred to the Kaluga Diocese. On April 19, 2003, on Lazarev’s Saturday, the first Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the archbishop of Kaluga and Borovsky Clement in the congregation of the clergy of the diocese. On the eve, before the All-Night Vigil, the rector of the church, Priest Sergiy Soskov, the right chapel was consecrated in small honor in honor of the reverend Zosima and Savvaty, the Solovetsky Miracle Workers. In 2010, the temple is operational and continues to be restored.
