I've been to Red Square twice and on both occasions I made a point of taking my picture next to this monument. The reason being? Well, my son is named after Kuzma Minin. The location of the statue next to St. Basil's Cathedral is stunning and although the area can be quite busy with tourists, it is worth taking a few minutes here to take in an important part of Russian history. Even when the area was busy, a police officer patrolling Red Square was helpful in taking my photograph next to the statue!

There is an interesting monument just in front of St. Basil's Cathedral at the Red Square commemorating Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky, the leaders of the all-Russian volunteer army which expel Polish occupying forces from Moscow in 1612 ending the conflict known as the Time of Troubles. This bronze monument was unveiled in 1818 and depicts seated Prince Dmitry with shield and sword in arms. He is next to a standing Kuzma Minin with an extended right hand. The statues are atop a pedestal with bas-relief scenes. You can conveniently see the Minin & Pozharsky Monument before your visit to St. Basil's Cathedral. It is just in front of the ticket booth and entrance.
