The massive granite rock, which frames the northern coast of Khortytsia with a horseshoe, is interrupted by a picturesque deep gorge called the Sich Gate near the most extreme point of the island. At this point, the Dnieper, fighting the massive edge of Khortytsia, is divided into two channels - a narrow rocky Old Dnieper between Khortytsia and the right bank, and a wide spacious New Dnieper between the left bank and the island. The sandy spit that once connected the northern edge of Khortytsia with the stone islands now visible in the direction of the Dnipro HPP once began here. The spit was washed away during one of the floods. The name "Sich Gate" was given to this place due to the legend, according to which it was possible to get to Sich only in this place, where the Cossack guard stood. The enemy, not knowing the allowed way, fell into a trap, and the Cossacks, who were going on the road, were warned that they would be able to return only through this rocky "gate". Associated with this place and another legend that tells of the ordeal that awaited all who were going to dedicate to the Cossacks. A log was thrown over this gorge, it was carefully coated with lard, and the subject had to cross this log from one side of the rock to the other with his eyes closed. Those who passed the test were ordained Cossacks, and the victims were caught from below, and invited to pass the test a year later.

A beautiful place to take a walk, enjoy the views, it would be very interesting to listen in more detail about these places, it is worth a visit. Opposite is the Dnieper hydroelectric dam located at the narrowest point of the river, it looks quite impressive)

According to legend, in this narrow gorge, the Cossacks organized a test for beginners. A log was thrown across the canyon, through which a couple had to go blindfolded, wishing to join the Sich Brotherhood. Who stumbled (comrades caught him below), came to take the exam the next year.
