It is one of the longest-lived and largest trees on Earth. Adult trees reach a height of 100 meters with a trunk diameter of 10-12 m. The oldest, at this time, the Giant Sequoia has an age of 3200 years, set on annual rings. The species got its name because of the huge size and external resemblance of its huge drooping branches with mammoth tusks. The bark is thick - 60-70 cm, very poorly ignited, which protects the plant during fires. By charring, the bark prevents damage to the wood. The tree has a very valuable wood. It is light and strong, does not rot, is well processed. The plant is very difficult to propagate by seed or vegetative means. Seed propagation requires specific conditions, and cuttings are difficult to root. Sequoia as an ornamental plant is bred in many countries: southwestern Europe, where it was imported in the middle of the XIX century, as well as in the Southern Crimea, Central Asia, on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus, Transcarpathia. The sequoia is depicted on a 25-cent California denomination coin.
