Soborna Square

Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. In 1748, the Cossack Elder, the town chieftain Ilya Volkhovsky, representatives of the church and city communities decided to construct on the main square of the Poltava fortress a stone cathedral and on November 8 concluded a contract with the architect from New Serbia, Stefan Stabansky. Among the initiators of the construction were Colonel Poltava Andriy Gorlenko, Dozen Andriy Runovsky, Regimental Judge Hryhoriy Sakhnovsky, Bunchuk Dimitriy Belukha and others
