The monument was opened on the day of the city on September 2, 2005. It is located in Shevchenko Square on the spot where in the summer of 2004 there was a tent camp of protesters against the union of three city universities into a single National University bag. Three girls symbolize three Sumy universities that opposed the union of Sumy universities. After the opening of the monument, information was published that the monument built did not correspond to the sketches that were shown to students. According to this information, according to the sketch, the monument consisted of girls who held hands and rose from their knees, looking hopefully into the sky. As a result, three girls are sitting with a sad expression on their faces and their hands are somehow tied.

Rarely do monuments put contemporaries. The monument to the protest students in 2004 was created by sculptor Shevchenko Alexey and architect Dyachenko Alexander. The feeling was conveyed to the artist, not the desire for freedom, and victory in their protests. Tied hands, longing in eyes - quite sad came out the image of the defeated, not the winners.
