Snake Cave is located near the tract Black Rock in the northern part of the island from the Old Dnieper. Above it is a stone Slavic image of a bearded God, which was erected there by the first director of the Khortitsa Museum Arnold Sokulsky around 1975. This statue was brought from the mouth of the Vilnyanka River (Vilnyansky district of Zaporizhia region), where under his leadership excavations of words settlement of VI-VIII centuries. Access to it is difficult, so almost no one visits it. Well-known local historian Jacob Novitsky, in 1887 made a description of one of the legends of this cave: “While the Cossacks lived here, there were many fish, animals, birds and forests on the Dnieper, and such grasses grew on the steppes that when you ride a horse, you can't see. And there was a reptile! .. There were yellow bellies, slugs, and in the cave in the Supreme Head of the island of Khortytsia, there was a snake. He did not touch anyone - and the Cossacks were not afraid of him. It was, they say, at night both shining and illuminating the Dnieper! The serpent did not appear every night, but as follows: three times a month or for a week, and all near the cave called the Serpent. When the Cossacks came from here under the Turks, they were followed by fish and birds, and every beast went. After the Cossacks came down, here, on the rocks, something was walking and mourning ... Then, from the Kichka side, when he starts throwing stones at Khortytsia, when he starts, the stones stick to the Black Rock ... It was sad and scary then ...! ”
