The Obelisk of Sofia is the only surviving attraction in the park of M.S. Vorontsov - one of the largest parks in Europe 1 floor. 19th century.
The famous Polish writer and literary critic of the 19th century, Mikhail Grabowski, wrote: “With regard to decorations, the park of Prince Vorontsov will yield to many, but due to its location and vastness, it can be considered the first - perhaps, throughout Europe ... this is not a garden in its usual size, but the whole region ”. The history of the park is amazing and tragic.
1830-1840 - in the Moshenskie mountains, Count M.S. Vorontsov laid a huge landscape park in the English style, built a three-story palace with 80 rooms; the Tower of Svyatoslav was erected - a grandiose structure 60 meters high; 55 roads have been laid in the park, the length of the main one - “Grafskaya road” - 8 versts; The territory of the park is divided into a pedestrian zone and "Menagerie", where exotic animals - fallow deer, wild horses, Peruvian llamas - roam freely.
1919 - the palace was robbed and burned; practically all architectural monuments and economic structures of the park were destroyed, the spiral staircase and the interior of the Svyatoslav tower were destroyed by fire; Peruvian lamas, presented by Emperor Alexander I, and other animals of the Menagerie were eaten by the Red Army.
1943 - the main attraction of the park, the Svyatoslav Tower, was destroyed. The tower was blown up because it could serve as a convenient strategic target for the enemy; Vorontsov's palace and park ensemble was finally razed to the ground and demolished by local residents.
2020 - only the main alley “Grafskaya Road” and the obelisk of Sofia remained from the man-made objects of the park; the only surviving monument is painted and damaged by vandals.
