We happened to arrive at 4pm and the welcome center closed at 5pm. We did not realize they gave tours. We were told the tours lasted about 90 minutes, but if we were interested they would give us a 60 minute one.nOur guide was very informative and we enjoyed seeing the cabin and hearing about Gene Stratton Porter's life.
I brought my 7-year-old daughter here for a tour before introducing her to her first GSP novel. We were the only visitors that afternoon, and I can only express praise and enthusiasm regarding the site staff and the exhibits.nnOur guide/naturalist, Mr. Curt Burnette, had an amazing depth of knowledge regarding GSP, the site, and history of the local area. He was easily able to keep the tour interesting for both an adult and a child, even reciting from memory parts of GSP’s novels that pertained to different parts of the tour. He was even able to recommend a GSP novel that would likely be appropriate and interesting for my daughter. I’m glad to say that we’re about 100 pages into our first GSP novel (Freckles) and my daughter is Gene’s number one fan.
Very nice site but I did not appreciate the attitude of one of the guides. She stated she would welcome the author of the Harry Potter series with open arms. I told her that this person had been told off by the public and government in Britain for her homophobic attitudes. She was unconvinced. I feel that Limberlost represented an attitude that was beyond the norm of the time.
Very interesting and entertaining. The tour was great! We want to bring our grandkids here for a tour!!
Good place to relax, there is an old covered bridge to walk on as well.
