Old town Abilene was just as important as Dodge City, Deadwood, or Tombstone when it came to legacy making. It was here that Wild Bill Hickok got his start as a lawman and gambler. The small outside exhibit is a smaller representation of an Old West town than Dodge City, but with a little imagination, you can almost envision the bustling everyday life of a time long ago. The historic reenactors here are great and are more than willing to demonstrate live fire techniques with the black powder guns of the day.
It's a cool little bit of old West history. Gunfights and cute can can girls. Not near as cool as Cowtown or Boothill though.
I visited in the early sunrise hours as part of a run-cation and cross-country trip. Not knowing what to expect as I ran along the roads of Abilene (2 miles south of I-70), I stumbled upon this little gem! It is the perfect little preservation of Old West history.nOver a dozen buildings (rail station, hotel, shops, small buildings, a cemetery, etc) from the mid-19th century adorn the old Abilene town area. There are info placards that explain the history, as well as relevance of this location. Theres's also a staffed information center and gift shop.nA definite stop on a cross-county journey if you want to stretch the legs.
Such a fun way to spend the day. I definitely recommend this even for families with small children. Just dont sit under the pavilion during the gun fighting if you are susceptible to headaches because it gets very loud there.
Nice place for young and old to learn about stories of Wild West and Abilene. From gun fight to cancan girls to seeing what an old town would have looked like plenty to see. No charge.
