Hallowed grounds for Black History and Women's History. It inspires me to think of Iowa at its best. Fort Des Moines Museum displays how Iowa socially and racially raised the standards of Equality and Equity and challenged the United States to follow suit! As a Black Man, this place makes me proud to be an Iowan.

I encourage everyone to go see the history of this place. They have fallen on economic hardship so it is not always open to the public and they do not have a/c currently running but this is a great place to visit if you get the opportunity

It's a neat little attraction but nothing special and could certainly be done better. It's also right next to the Fort Des Moines Correctional Facility so you get the added bonus of losing your search and seizure rights despite not being a criminal, and the area is crawling with prison parolees. That might not be so bad, but they also have a sizeable sex offender unit there and since it's a work release center they're out in public just like everyone else. Anyway, not a stellar experience to say the least.

Nice attraction about the history of Ft. Des Moines and all the activities that went on throughout the years.

This is a diamond in the rough. It is a privilege and an honor to have this facility in Des Moines. That it’s free and survives on donations is amazing.
