There's a couple of issues that I have with the layout of the station. First of all, in order to get to the inbound platform, you have to cross the tracks at grade, so you need to get there early. Second, they could improve the station if the station house were on the inbound side, rather than the outbound. Also, they close the waiting room after the morning rush hour.nnBut the good news is that it's serviced frequently, with departures to Chicago roughly once per hour. There's also plenty of parking available, and a monthly pass can be purchased from the city of Waukegan for $60 per month.

If you use this station in off hours, the indoor waiting area is closed. Only bus stop style shelters are available in this case which are nowhere near enough for the typical amount of people boarding. Platforms are not sheltered. If it's raining you better have an umbrella.

I want to give this station 2 1/2 stars simply due to there being no indoor service after I believe 11 or 12 p.m, so in the winter time bundle up because you'll be standing outside freezing. You'll have to purchase your ticket on the train, but it wont count against you. I do like that the station is nicely lit, there is 24 hour + parking and cabs are lined up waiting for those who want a cab. Beware people will steal your cab if you've already called ahead.

Serves Lake County seat town well. Lots of parking. Only drawback is that there are no enclosed waiting areas during off hours (after 11 a.m. or so) which can get rough during really cold weather or when there is a lot of snow. Limited amenities. On the plus side, it is very convenient and close to the center of town. It is served by bus routes and taxis are often waiting when a train comes in.
