I'm a bit bias with my opinion because my family owned this house before it was sold to the county. I've spent many nights here. I'm very grateful it's now a park and I can always visit. I wish the house was open but we'll just have to come back another time to venture down that memory lane.nnIf only I was aware of the history of this place when I was younger... I remember seeing the archeological digs when I'd visit but really didn't comprehend the significance. My grandfather would have so many arrow heads and now I truly understand why.
Mount Calvert is an interesting place to visit. If you're in the area, it's worth a stop. It's a sizeable piece of land along the Patuxent River in Maryland that houses many archeological wonders including remains of an indigenous American village thousands of years old, a colonial town (Charles Town) and a federal period tobacco plantation mansion. Signs guide and educate you along the way reminding visitors of the evil of slavery. The views along the river are beautiful and there's a little museum inside the mansion (with free bathrooms!). Parking is free.
History and Beauty. Wide open spaces give really nice views of the Patuxent River wetlands and Jug Bay. It was great watching ospreys hunting for fish. It was interesting reading about the history of the Mount Calvert at different points in time. We had viewed the manor during a sunset cruise on the river through Prince George's Count Parks and Recreation, spurred our curiosity to visit. Our early morning visit was rewarded with a beautiful and peaceful sunrise over the water.
This is one of my favorite spots to get away too. It's slightly back country. A little off the beaten path. Farms along the way. Waterfront is lovely. There's a small boat launch. I've driven, biked, run, rucked, motorcycled to this spot many times chasing peace and sunsets. I only wish the structure was open sometimes. I'd like to see inside.
Beautiful Historical Sight. True History
