We came to the park this morning because Dutch Gap was closed (not sure why that was closed and Pocahontas Park is open). Our primary objective today was hiking and birding (hence Dutch Gap, great place to bird).nI haven't been here in a long time, years really. So, I wanted to pick up a trail map. They have these right in front. The woman behind the counter could not answer my questions about what birds I should keep a lookout for, so she got the ranger on duty.nBoth of them were extremely friendly. The ranger did give us a really thorough explanation of what birds we could expect, and what birds we could see at different times of the year as well.nHe (the ranger) mentioned that this is not his area of expertise, but he was very helpful. It seems that even if this is not his oevre, he went out of his way to make sure that the visitors were going to have a good time at his park.nI will definitely be going back, and stopping by this center when I do.

Beautiful place lovely trails. Visitor center closed due to Covid-19. Take your masks though . Some folks are not wearing one... Be safe and help keep others safe too.

The rangers here are very friendly, helpful, personable people. The Nature Center has a bee colony that's really fun to look at, and a huge turtle and many other cool animals. There are public restrooms, water fountains, and respite from the hot or cold.

Stay tuned by visiting the Friends of Pocahontas State Park website on events for kids. The Visitor center has awesome park rangers who love the programming they perform with littles. The Visitor has restrooms (dated and not many but clean) and water fountains. Parking is $7 but park entrance is free.
