After years of living in the Twin Cities I finally got to go and check this place out! American Swedish Institute did NOT disappoint!! My partner and I took the family out to celebrate our son's 10th birthday (both kids are obsessed with mansions) The place was beautiful and the exhibit was incredible! I especially appreciated the friendly and helpful staff (shout out to Patty, a volunteer who was SO kind and fun!) She warmly welcomed us and charmed our kiddos, who insisted on going as their favorite video game characters (Luigi and Link) for the occasion. We will definitely be back!! :)

Very cool place! It’s a history museum, modern art museum, gift shop, cafe, event center, and there was a plaque for the Swedish Consulate at the door. Definitely don’t feel unsatisfied with the variety. Absolutely breathtaking preserved mansion which looks more like a castle, but so cool to see the awesome old architecture and the furnishings and art throughout. I adored the old kitchen and butlers pantry, I love cooking and baking, so the old ways are always so cool to see!nnSome of the hallways are a little narrow and there are lots of stairs, but they have an elevator and do a good job making it accessible for something built in a time where that wasn’t a consideration. There are helpful guides and signs throughout. There is also a LOT of natural light which is my favorite thing about it I think. Good for wintry days when you want the sun but not the cold.nnThe cafe is amazing - I went with a friend who didn’t grow up with the Swedish American culture like I did and this place totally sold her on the cuisine, I was impressed too. I got some super tasteful and tender braised pork belly with cabbage and sauerkraut, and a cardamom cream bun. A mix of the old and new! And there’s a lot in the gift shop, I’m sure you could find something for everyone. From handmade dala horses to a kids section, cookbooks and kitchen gear, and wool blankets and bags. I got a little enamel pin and a tiny carved dala horse.nnThis was a good rounded day outing with a friend. Lunch, things to see, time to socialize with each other, and a shop to putz around in. Totally recommend if you’re interested in history, architecture, modern and classic art, or just a unique and really quality lunch.

I love visiting the American Swedish Institue. The staff is great and helpful. Love visiting all the rooms and seeing whatever is currently on exhibit.
