Beautiful monument to a horrible war. The Tuscarora War (1711-1715) is a defining moment in US history. Like King Philip/Metacomet to the North, the Tuscarora resistance very nearly ousted the colonial presence. The Tuscarora Nation was finally defeated at Nooherooka Fort by English colonizers and native allies. The 950 Tuscarora defending their homeland were massacred and enslaved.nnOnly a few years later, the nearby Native nations that allied with the English against the Tuscarora would rise up against the colonizers in the Yamasee War concentrated further South. These two conflicts shifted the pattern of enslaved labor away from captured Native Americans and increasingly toward a reliance on the import of African people.nnThe Tuscarora homelands stretch between the Neuse and the Cape Fear river basins. It remains one of the most biodiverse regions in the world.nnRefugees from the war fled North to join Iroquoian allies, reforming the federally recognized Tuscarora Nation. Others remained nearby, living on a reservation in Bertie County, joining other native communities, or assimilating with Black and white immigrants. Many members of the state recognized Lumbee Tribe are descendants of the Tuscarora. There is a modern-day movement for state and federal recognition of the Tuscarora Nation in North Carolina. Recognition would allow the nation better access to funding and sovereignty.

grew up in this area, and had no idea so much history and significance existed so close. this area potentially changed the direction america took. Out of respect to the ones who died to maintain the culture and right to live as the Creator brought them to, ill make it my business to learn, visit and share what i can about these gems of eastern NC..

This place brought me a real connection to my Tuscarora people despite the resistance from many others. I love this place and appreciate the dedication of so many that was involved. Our people were and are still strong. Thank you to my ancestors who fought until death and for those who were determined to remain here. You are my heroes!

As soon as you spot this monument, the spirit of its intent hits your heart. The images within the monument gradually pop out at you, and you understand just how amazing this sculpture is. You will see where visitors before you have placed memorial flowers and stones, and you will want to contribute to this outpouring of heart. Let us all try to visit this place, as well as others like it, so that we remember history and learn from it, becoming a more civilized and gentle people than we once were.
