Requires a pass and boarding a shuttle to access for non-military. Fun place to come sight seeing even while the lighthouse is closed. Several points of interest are accessable, including a view of the ocean. Amenities available at a nearby convenience store.

Was surprised to get to the security checkpoint and saw that it’s an active military installation. The MP stationed at the gate were very nice and forgave me for accidentally going through the stop sign as they know silly tourists like myself go without realising that it is an active military installation.nNo problem, after being directed to the security search portion of the checkpoint, I was handed a pass and boarded the shuttle to the light house area where there was a small gift shop as well as First Landing memorial, then the two lighthouses. The old Cape Henry could be climbed in with timed tickets, but the newer, taller one cannot be. Would recommend a visit, cheers.

Cape Henry Lighthouse is the first built by the US Government. Construction was ok'd by George Washington and supervised by Alexander Hamilton. There's now a second black and white lighthouse next to it but that one isn't open for visitation. Both are on a military base so it's unfortunately not possible to get on base unless you know someone. Great little pieces of history. Due to COVID it's not possible to climb up but you can still pay $5 and go up to the base and a guide will share information with you.

Enjoyed what we could see. Very friendly and informative. You have to reserve a spot online to be able to go into the lighthouse.

Awesome US history. Quick walk to a real quiet secluded beach. Folks were nice in the gift shop.
