Today was the first time I have been there. Not many people due to chilly weather but the folks in this museum was great. They took the time to explain everything on each floor. Explain the history behind everything on each floor was from surrounding area. Coming back in the spring time.

I recently visited the museum since it reopened after Florence. It has a number of decoy displays as well as historical items from the 1800s and early 1990s pertaining to fishing and boat building. It has a section devoted to the major hurricanes we have experienced here. There are monitors showing video interviews with Downeasters explaining their way of life and boat building. They also have seasonal displays. I came when Christmas trees decorated with coastal motifs dotted the interior. It took me a little over an hour to see, but I am sure one could easily spend at least two to three hours depending on one's interests. There is a gift shop, restrooms, and admission is free. You can make a donation if you wish.

The museum was Christmas decorated on January 6. Has lots of waterfowl decoys and depicts the lives of Core Sound residents. The staff is friendly and helpful. Location is right beside the ferries to Cape Lookout and Shackleford Banks. It is a very beautiful building and very clean inside.

Good Museum to really get the local flavor of the Harker's Island culture and history. We enjoyed seeing the wood boats outside. Lots of artifacts you can see up close and read about. The remodeling and new floor after the recent hurricane was done very nicely. Nice gift shop inside also. Lots of examples of the extensive duck decoy carvers' work, along with seeing the tools they used.

Fantastic decoy and art museum. The shop is an excellent resource for American folk art — both decoys and hand carved birds. Worth the trip to Harkers Island.
