Located in nearby Villa Rica, 16 km from Douglasville, this museum is the only one in Georgia located on the exact site where gold was found during the gold rush days of the late 1800s.nnIt also contains one of very few authentic gold stamping mills dating from the nineteenth century.nnBeginning in the 450 square metre exhibition space, visitors are able to explore the remains of the actual gold mines where the precious metal was found.nnYou can then step aboard the Pine Mountain scenic railroad, which chugs its way around almost 11 hectares of parkland.
The museum is small but very educational. The train ride gives a guided tour of the history of the area. It's a beautiful place where you can walk right up to historical places of America's first gold rush.
The sight was closed the last time I went there but I have visited in the past. It's a beautiful place and has a good bit of history attached to it. Great exibits of a time gone by.
A wonderful place especially great for the holidays. For Halloween, why walk through another haunted house, when you can ride the ghost train through cemeteries, haunted swamps, and an array of haunted scenes containing live actors (well some may be dead at that time)? At Xmas, why go see a boring mall Santa, when you can take a train though a festive array of holiday scenes and visit not only Santa while there, but a whole host of funny cheerful holiday characters?nnThe people are nice, the actors are entertaining, the venders serve great food, your whole experience will make you want to return again and again.
Reservations only for the museum so we didn't get to go indoors. We took the walking tour along the trails. The map and numbered sights didn't match up and it was hard to figure out. But the placards are interesting and the ruins were neat to see. I wish we could've ridden the train.
