This family-owned and operated non-profit museum and learning Center is located in the heart of Bartow, Florida. Curator Robert Luster agreed to give my family and I a tour when we visited from MIA for Christmas. With love and conviction, Mr. Luster shared with us the history of Africans living and expressing freely on that continent to the time of enslavement in “the land of the free, ” and of their descendants during the periods afterwards to modern times. The museum’s artifacts, photographs, newspaper articles and so on are wonderfully on display, making the best of the limited space. It’s neatly sectioned off by topics including a dedication to military veterans. To enter the museum is free but FPL and maintenance is not so be generous with your donations to this place that so wonderfully profiles, preserves, and makes available to all, human history.
Very Rich in African-American Culture, Great Historical Site. Charles Lester is an intelligent business man, strongly rooted to culture, very interesting ancestors I've never seen in the Black History Books. Very Organized and Multifaceted Facility. Very Glad I Went, I Learned A Lot. Lester Family Also Rich In Culture of Bartow History.
To the children in our church there last week. It was very thorough and gave alot of information. The kids enjoyed themselves very much. I loved they fact the have a entire wall and a room about African American history in polk county. We're not often taught about our town's history in class. It's mostly focused on national history.
The volunteer women in there is very kind and gracious and will show you around and helps by answering questions regarding artifacts and the readings. They have original pieces from slavery, cotton and pieces from Africa.
AWESOME place to visit and learn about our shared human story... all should make it a must go ud83dudc4dud83cudfff
