Hawaii County Police Department

My dad was a sergeant with a respectable police department, so I grew up around great cops in it for the right reasons. The other day, I had to call the police in Kona regarding an abusive man (with children involved). The cop who showed up blatantly took the man’s side, basically saying that when his wife doesn’t do what he wants, “it makes him want to destroy something” and that “he totally gets where he’s coming from.” I couldn’t believe it. It was my house they were called to. The man refused to leave and I left with our children as the situation escalated. He was allowed to stay in my house (despite threats, aggressive behavior, etc.) and my children and I were expected to spend the night elsewhere. The man has no ownership in the house/property and has never even received mail there. Unbelievable disregard and injustice for victims by this police department. I shouldn’t generalize the whole department based off of this one officer, but there was another cop with him who stood by and said/did nothing. I hope they start choosing their representatives better before other domestic violence cases end worse.

Took my concern seriously. Provided prompt and courteous service which I appreciated.

Visited the beautiful island from Canada with my 3, 5 and 22 year old children. As we were walking to the beach these 3 thugs were walking towards us and one of them shouldered me and said what’s up holiday. Anyways, the officer that came to our home was respectful and seemed interested in finding these idiots. Like seriously who tries to pick a fight with a father and his children?! We are back in Canada and I receive a voicemail from the department that since no witnesses will return their calls there is nothing they can do and have closed the file. Witnesses? There were none. So basically they just wanted to close the file to get it out of their hair. They had a description of the car which was very distinguishable and the clowns who threatened us and they couldn’t find them?! If this is how you will treat your tourists the by just turning a blind eye then so be it. We will never go back to This island and I suggest anyone reading this do the same. Maui is much nicer and the locals don’t seem to have a problem with us being there.

I called about a woman across from Kona Alii condos ranting obsenities, flipping drivers and walkers off, and running after cars in the street half out of her mind. She seemed to be decompensating in front of my eyes and probably needed medical attention.nI am a visitor who has come for months for over 35yrs and was treated so rudely I could not believe my ears.nShame on this person handling the call. I tried to give a very thorough description of the person which he did not care to take. Listening is key in working any beat and this person needs to get re-trained, sad to say.

I called a few times to report suspicious activity and was treated like I was the criminal. Cops have no respect for citizens that pay taxes for their salaries. Shame on you.
