Discovery Elementary is a pleasant, safe and social school for students and parents, but it does not prepare students well for San Elijo Middle School. Most of the teachers were nice and enjoyable; a couple of the teachers were not. However, I often found myself comparing what my child was learning at Discovery Elementary to what I was learning when I was in those same grade levels and there was a considerable difference.nnI believe that Discovery Elementary was lacking in English and Math. I'm not sure if the poor teaching curriculum was a product of Common Core or if my child was unlucky enough to have teachers who taught the minimum. Nevertheless, now that my child is in middle school, I've found that kids from other schools have mastered more skills than those students from Discovery. For example, the students in math class are expected to know a certain way of doing long division. There are four students who don't have the knowledge to do it. All four of the students went to Discovery Elementary.nnIn addition to the differences in curriculum from when I was a child, another big problem that I see is the placement of students in classes. In my elementary school we were placed in classes according to our academic level. Kids with a higher level of learning and understanding were placed in more advanced classes while children with less aptitude for academics were placed in less advanced classes. At Discovery, and maybe other schools, the classes are divided equally with a wide range of learning abilities in each class. I believe that the class is then taught to the lowest common denominator. For my child, this resulted in hundreds of hours spent reading a book during class time after finishing an assignment while other kids were given help by the teacher to complete the given assignment. This was a complete waste of time since my child can read just fine, on his own time, outside of school.nnDuring the last four years of my Child's attendance at Discovery Elementary, I was often amazed at how little was learned at school yet how much praise the school gets in publications and reviews. I don't get it. Discovery Elementary may get a lot of praise from a lot of people, but I think most of it has to do with the social aspect of the school rather than the academic aspect.nnIn conclusion, it seems as though there has been a general decline in our school systems all the way up to the college level, where big universities are happy to take tens of thousands of dollars to pump out graduates with weak degrees, leaving them unprepared for the real world and ridden with debt.nI believe our children's schooling needs to start improving from the bottom and I believe that Discovery Elementary needs to get its act together academically. Although my child was probably in the top 10% of his class, he left Discovery unprepared for middle school.nnI gave Discovery two stars because of the social skills that myself and my child learned from the experience and for the friendliness that abounded on the campus.
