Such a surprising museum! An all-star collection of American artwork, all free, and the building is beautiful. Absolutely recommended and worth a day trip to Youngstown on its own merits.

Free of charge and just the right size to enjoy with part of a day without a huge commitment or feeling intimidated. Contains a good sampling of paintings and other media from American artists with their own styles but obvious European influences. Includes landscapes and genre work from early days in the US colonization then transitions to impressionism and more contemporary styles.

Had never spent any time in Youngstown but I heard about the Butler so I made it a point to drive over on my last trip to Cleveland. On campus of Youngstown State. Love that due to Covid and arriving right when they first opened I had the place pretty much to myself. FREE admission for all. Not a lot of parking but that was also free (at least when I went. You do have to pass a little booth). Love the idea of a museum full of American artists. Motherwells, couple of Warhols, JS Sargent, AbEx, modern art...something for everyone. All staff I encountered were very pleasant especially in the museum shop. Took my time to enjoy the art (and shopped) and I was still out in just 90 minutes.
