CLOSED for winter!nI will not give a bad rating because I have no doubt it's cool. HOWEVER, the information needs to be updated on here and website. There's no indication that it's closed for the winter besides there being only snowmobile tracks going out to the ship. It should be labeled as temporarily closed and the website should state the months it's open. Being from SW MI close to the state line, we only come up about every 7 years. My 11 & 9 year old were bummed since we stopped in Mackinaw just to see the ship.
The staff was very thorough and really really nice! We knew what to expect walking in as the nice woman in the beginning explained everything very well and gave us a very good rundown of what to expect.nnThe ship was clean and well kept with loads of history and information throughout, the yellow arrows were very simple to follow, but those ladders really are STEEP! Though if you take them slow and hold the sides, you'll be alright.nnThe person in the engine room was super informative and knew so much about how the ship operated, while also making out easy to understand for those who aren't familiar with engines. They knew fun facts that we found interesting!nnThere are plenty of videos to watch and things to explore, and while the shop is small, it was cool and even the clerk there was super informative!nnI've never toured a ship before, and this was a great experience!
This was a site to see. If you like history or just looking and something cool or maybe your bored because you've checked everything else out in Mackinaw and/or on the Island itself, then this is the place to spend a couple hours. For me it was just cool looking at the old ship and learning how it was used and how the crew survived and managed living on it. Super cool!!!
It is so neat to be able to board such a large ship with a rich history. A lot of climbing is involved so make sure to wear appropriate attire. They were getting ready to close for the 2020 season so we will look forward to returning in the Spring of 2021.
Very interesting history. Walking through at my own pace, reading the signage, watching the video's and asking questions of the staff who were very knowledgeable and friendly, made this worth the visit. My sons and husband was glad we visited the Icebreaker! Would recommand
