Having served in the Air Force, I always enjoy visiting any military museums. The USS Yorktown does NOT disappoint. On board are more than a dozen WWII aircraft (in the Hanger Bay). On the Flight Deck, are newer Aircraft, including several jet fighters. Every room has posters with text & pictures to explain what everything is & the history that occurred there. Prepare for an all day adventure, be certain to wear good walking shoes & eat your Wheaties before arriving, you'll need it!
Awesome place. We wondered around for about three hours with our kids. If you are into WW2 or airplanes I’m sure you could spend more time reading every plaque. You get access multiple areas with your ticket. Yorktown(aircraft carrier), submarine, destroyer, and a Vietnam era area with multiple vehicles and buildings. If you plan on going in the summer go right when they open to avoid crowds and more importantly the heat. There are a few air conditioned areas on the ship but most are not.
Plan on spending all day! The carrier has elevators for those that have difficulty with stairs. Lots of walking. The destroyer is very interesting. The submarine area was closed. The Vietnam experience made me cry. The video was excellent! Would love to bring my grandkids the next time.
Great experience that could last all day! We have kids ages 12, 11, 10 & 9. They really enjoyed the scavenger hunt and it was hard enough that they needed to really work for the answers. The flight simulation was loved by kids and not loved by adults. We loved the smaller ship, the Laffey, the best.
The Yorktown was a great visit! Make sure you have about 4hrs to tour it comfortably. Wear tennis shoes because there is a lot of walking! It is rich in history and a great educational stop along with the Vietnam experience.
