Saw two herd of pronghorns as we drove through the park. Stayed at the Hot Springs Campground which was fantastic. Took a hike near the campground, mostly off trail with amazing views.

Visited Saturday 8/15 to Sunday 8/16/2020 for an over night camp stay and to see some sites. Be aware if coming from the North/Burns, the last 41+ miles are on gravel washboard roads. There may also be cattle roaming the road in the first 10+ miles. On my way in I slowed several times due to cattle on the side of the road or in the road. There is no cell service once you leave the blacktop, so make sure you are prepared. The campground I stayed in only had a handful or less of camp spots open out of the 26 available (not including the tent only sites). You are only allowed to stay at campgrounds (free primitive sites) in the refuge, no overlanding where ever you want (this helps protect the environment you are visiting.) For how busy it was at camp, I did not see a huge amount of travelers when I was exploring other areas in the refuge.there is no trash service here; so pack it in, pack it out, leave no trace, leave places better than you found them. This was my first time visiting this park. It is beautiful. Saw several herds of antelope on a hike I did Sunday 8/16/2020. Make sure to do your research or grab some pamphlets from the welcome kiosk about 20+ miles from park headquarters. Vaulted toilets are available at campgrounds and the one that I went into did not have toilet paper. This place is not Handicap accessible and they're are no handicap parking. Check for gate closures due to inclemental weather especially in the shoulder seasons. Multiple area had gates and although they were open in summer they do get closed in shoulder season.

Big, desolate, lonely. Miles of sagebrush punctuated by the occasional antelope and raptor. Bring bug spray and lots of water. Nice open country hiking

Very off-the-beaten-path, and that's why I love it. We go at least twice per year to soak in hot springs and hike/nature watch.
