So amazing. My Grandpa and I had a boat tour of Grand Lake at 2pm, and got to the museum around 1:30pm. We weren't able to finish our full tour, but the ladies working running the tours said we could come back after our boat tour for free and finish the museum tour, even though a new shift of employees were working.
My wife and I love to step back in time and see things how others would have seen it over a hundred years ago. Learning the history of the great lake and the Kauffman house family history was eye opening and was made 10 times better by the Vietnam vet that does the tour guide, he has so much enthusiasm for what he does and it is transferred to his guests. My wife and I learned a lot!
Completed in 1892, this former hotel on the banks of Grand Lake is worth a visit. Not too big, you can take a guided or unguided tour. Small fee for entry. Open in summer only. Lots of period furniture. Small but nice grounds with grand lake just across the street.
I was enthused to have a chance at another visit, the docent guiding the tour in front of me was beyond helpful. His knowledge of history here in the valley was astounding, and I took great interest listening to every word. His wife was unable to offer a tour, but we briefly jumped in with the one her husband was giving. She offered me an account of the Kaufman’s history first thing, and was ready to answer any pestering questions I had. The immaculate detail, and care for the restoration of history brought a warm smile to my face. I would highly recommend anyone visit, or volunteer if they have the chance.
This is an amazing local treasure. Beautifully restored, the artifacts here are phenomenal and the history is fascinating. I would recommend this to any age.
