Kind of like stepping into the future: wall-sized touch displays, virtual environments, and spidersuits. This is where the CAVE (Cave Automatic Virtual Environment) was invented----a virtual reality environment consisting of a cube-shaped room in which the walls are rear-projection screens. Three-dimensional ( 3-D ) images within the cave appear to float in mid-air. The viewer, who wears special glasses synchronized with the projectors, can walk around an image to study it from all angles. CAVEs are used for research into a wide range of disciplines including archaeology, architecture, art, biology, engineering, geometry, geology, meteorology and physics.
