The place for understanding the island's development since 1663.

This museum is nicely put together. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Lots of visuals to help you understand. Edisto was occupied by the North early in the Civil War but abandoned pretty soon thereafter. (It took air-conditioning to get them back In the 70s.)nnCouple that with the fact that plantation owners spent a lot of the mosquito-infested summers inland, and you get an interesting and unique history. There is a memorable photo of enslaved workers wearing the uniform of the North. Took a while to figure that out.

A nice selection of local crafts in the gift shop as well as a wonderful selection of books. The museum is top notch for a small island community.
