One of my favorite paddling destinations! We make a yearly trip to check on the alligators and see any of the other wildlife. We even saw a mink once. Beautiful area!
Great hidden gem! As a northerner it's awesome that I can come down here for a weekend to explore a true southern swamp. You can rent canoes and look for alligator, rare birds, and turtles. There's wonderful photography opportunities and the swamp is big enough that you can paddle off the beaten path to feel a sublime sense of isolation among nature.
Camped there just this past weekend and had a wonderful time. The camp sites were secluded enough to give you privacy from your neighbors. Each site had a picnic table, trash can, fire pit, and a soft mossy square for your tent. Restrooms with showers were centrally located to the sites (with clear signage) but were hidden by trees so as not to be an eyesore. Trails were marked clearly and hours for the park and visitor center were also conspicuous. Firewood was conveniently available for purchase at the visitor center. We would definitely visit again, perhaps when the weather is a little cooler.
I truley love relaxing hiking and getting out on the water. The staff are friendly and helpful aleays...the shower house is great
