Galax High School

This school is overall great. The people there are very nice. The only bad thing is they focus too much on football. I feel as if the drama and band programs deserve more money. Most money the school gets seems to go directly to football. They spent over 180,000 dollars on a turf football field. And are soon building a new weight room building. I would say it’s a athletic turf field but they barely even show the soccer field lines on the field. I believe the money should have went towards other programs. The auditorium is far from new. The band room and cafeteria is cramped. The engineering lab needs more space. Baseball is apparently a joke. I’m told the bats don’t even have handles. They constantly have to share the 1 baseball field. Many of the programs wish to host competitions but cannot due to regulations of their own fields. A lot of the school still does not have air conditioning or heating such as the band room. Many students wish for better parking. We have a huge lot for juniors but it is far from doing justice. Filled with pot holes and a drainage system (from the “turf” field) this lot gets worse by the day. The student body demands it to either fixed or relocated to the current practice field. You may say there are problems with that. You would be wrong. Moving the new weight room to the junior lot in most ways would actually help the school athletics. This would put the weight room (which is supposedly supposed to have a locker room) closer beside the football field. Either way, players would walk a hill to the field and honestly this is closer. Plus putting the junior lot where the practice field is would also be good. No longer would you worry about the students doing stupid stuff unmonitored and then they would truly have a reason to pay for this parking space. Also where does the school expect people to park for this new weight room? The teacher parking lot? The senior? I do believe this will cause a huge stir that could easily be fixed by moving to the junior lot. There is plenty of room to park down there. I don’t believe the school thought of all of these when deciding the location for this new weight room. We also believe that bullying rules should be enforced better. Everyday we witness at least 3 people being bullied with no teacher intervention. We want this to change. We also believe BJ Carroll, the 11th grade English teacher deserves a raise. She is an amazing teacher and others should take example from her. We also believe that a a vending and drink machine should placed in the cafeteria. You may argue that is a bad idea, but hear us out. Some kids forget their lunch, you may say they can just get school lunch. I’m sorry to say this, but not everyone likes the school lunch. With a vending machine kids can get what they want and the school gains profit at the same time. I’m sorry we waisted your time but these are things the student body United wishes to change.
