If you have any interest in Theodore Roosevelt or NY Living in the mid 18 hundreds , visiting this site is a great way to indulge it. A short film on the first floor is the perfect introduction to young Theodore. Tours of the house are offered and the guide on the one I took was knowledgeable and welcoming of questions. I omit one star since the original house was demolished and the current one a reproduction although many of the family artifacts were restored to their proper place in the house. It’s FREE, always an incentive in NYC. It’s relatively small with just one downstairs gallery so a must to take the tour up the steps into the living quarters and bedrooms. . Check website for tour schedule

For a free place, I suppose one shouldn’t complain. The outside (as well as inside) is well maintained and nice to look out. You have the park ranger behind the desk who is a Teddy Roosevelt fanatic and will tell you all about him, unprompted.nnThe museum itself is a bit sparse, evidenced more so by the empty cases in the back. You get to learn about his family origins and Teddy’s rise to president. There are numerous inspirational quotes by Teddy about how he focused on conservation, antitrust, and progressive policies.nnI was very impressed that they still had artifacts from when Roosevelt was alive, such as autographs of his cabinet, the glasses case that prevented a bullet from killing him, and the manuscript that took the bullets.nnTo make the museum better, I would suggest expanding the tour to upper floors (not sure what else is in the building) and perhaps adding more detail about his policies, even if not all of it would shed positive light on him.

Very nice history lesson about one of the great American Presidents. Tours are free and will only cost you time!
