I love the life size model of a whale heart. It's big enough for kids to crawl in. It's closed for covid but very cool none the less. They have a number of complete whale skeletons and you really get the sense of how big they are. They have many rooms and exhibits about the culture and history of whaling. And why it was so hard for many cultures to give up. The maritime history of New England is really wrapped up in whaling and you get a great understanding of how and why. Fascinating. I recommend planning to coming back over a couple days. 2 hours was not enough.
There is a huge diversity of takes on the history and impact of the global whaling trade, and seafaring in general, at this museum. The range of artifacts is impressive, and it does a great job elucidating the many cultures and peoples involved with whaling, while still grounding itself in New Bedford history. A full adult ticket costs $19, but anyone with some curiosity and appreciation for history, nautical subjects, marine biology and ecology, or anthropology can spend several hours here and not get bored. It's a little tough to navigate, and there wasn't as much in the way of multimedia or interactivity as I'd like, but our guide Cody was supremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic in helping recommend what to see and bringing the exhibits to life.
Really interesting and informative. Their collection was so much more than just about whaling. It was a wonderful experience. If people don’t know this many museums give discounted rates if you have a EBT card...news you can use!!!
Definitely worth visiting. Huge information about whales, whaling in NB and many more. Very interesting place in cozy and nice city.
Amazing museum! The docent Cody was fantastic, he gave us a personal tour of the museum and brought the stories of the whaling industry and life aboard the ships to life for me and my two daughters. We learned so much and my kids can’t stop talking about it. So much history and so many beautiful galleries to explore. If you are visiting the area, it is a must see! Ask for Cody, he is a wealth of knowledge and really funny. My kids loved him and his bringing history to life made it relatable. 5 stars!
