They were closed when we went
Really nice place. I wouldn't say it is worth a special trip (only because it is small), but if you are in the area, definitely stop in. It only takes about an hour or two to see everything. Lots of really neat history and the staff is friendly and helpful as can be. I may go back without the kids in the future so I can spend a little more time reading everything.
Wow!nnThis is one of those places that we would see driving to visit my Dad in Tyler and back home to Houston.nnFinally, my husband and I decided to take a drive and finally go and visit this museum. We are so glad that we did!nnLots of interesting history and great displays. I was quite amazed at some of the works from the prisoners. I had two favorites, one was a chess set that was made out of soap, had one side prisoners and the other side guards. The next was a little bear that was gifted to a warden for causing so much trouble for him. The letter was very humbling and the bear had a lot of nice details. If you stop to see this museum, don’t forget to look at this bears back.nnThey have so many works from their shops, from furniture to carvings to leather and more. But those two things I mentioned above are the ones that touched me most.nnOld Sparky is really wild to see in person. Hard to think of sitting there taking your judgement.nnThe ball and chains, the artistic armor with razor blades. Pretty scary.nnHighly recommend stopping if you get the chance!
The front desk ladies were really sweet and welcoming. Prices are affordable. Love the history in this museum and it is easy to access from I-45
