If you’re applying for the delivery driver job don’t accept anything under 35k a year. That’s fair for what they want from you. The other driver (family) covers way less territory than you ever will. You’ll be covering a much larger area of Houston and to do it they’ll have you do 2 routes. We’re talking like 75% of the greater Houston area. Compared to just 25% for the other driver. Your farthest area from the office will be easily 2-3 times further than the other driver. Wouldn’t be as bad if you could take your vehicle home like the other driver. But no you’ll have to drive back from these much further locations. Oh and let’s talk about vehicle. As for vehicle the other driver gets a van that is easy to load orders in and out of. You, you’ll get a pickup truck. Not so bad when it’s not raining and you can use the uncovered Colorado. However when it’s raining or when you have larger loads that won’t fit in a mid size Colorado you’ll have a long bed Silverado with a camper on it. It will have to be strategically loaded in order to minimize the amount of crawling and PITA digging you have to do to unload deliveries. You will regularly have to crawl deep into the truck to get orders out.nnThere are some positives to the job. There are some days you won’t work all day and you’ll always get 40 hours pay. That doesn’t happen as much as it used to because they have picked up more builders to deliver to in deep areas like Montgomery, TX, Willis and Mt Belvieu. My take on this is that the pay they pay you is so low and that the amount of hours you usually end up working end up working on their favor as opposed to if they just paid you a more fair hourly rate. Another positive is you are free to take stops on the routes for personal errands if your day is not going to be full. But again that doesn’t happen as much anymore.nnThe average base pay for a delivery driver in Houston is over $16 an hour. After 3 years there I would say this job should get closer to $17 an hour under their current pay structure of getting paid for 40 hours a week regardless of hours. If they wanted to do hourly pay then I would up that to $20 an hour. I believe that would be fair compensation for the work.nnAs a company they are ok, but they are cheap owners and as such they will squeeze everything they can out of employees in order to penny pinch. This brings morale down around the office and people are often stressed out. They are such penny pinchers that after 2 years they never replaced a cracked camper from the truck being rear ended. The camper door does not shut properly and you have to slide it back into place to close it. It’s cracked pretty badly and it was never addressed. Other areas their cheapness shows is that they don’t order nearly enough inventory for the amount of orders they have. As a result many things will be back ordered and they’ll give some standard lie to the builders or customer about how it’s a shortage from the manufacturer. Those back orders create chaos when they pile up. Builders looking to go with them for hardware should consider this before deciding as this can and regularly does cause your CMs to improvise and be late closingnnThey don’t care about employee safety. I was never given a hard hat for when I’m in construction areas delivering.nThey also didn’t require masks to be worn to safeguard employees from Covid and I had to buy my own PPEnnAlso, if you are the type that wants to move up to better positions in the company you likely won’t get the chance here. The owner himself told me it’s harder to get good delivery help than it is to get help with other positions. No doubt due to the way the territory is so uneven (Again 75/25 split of the entire metro Houston area). This means if you’re good at your job it will be very hard to move to a better paying role such as sales because they want you to stay in deliveries and they think delivery drivers should be paid less than the average base pay for the work and area. If it paid 35k a year it would be a 3 star job. At the rate they want to pay it’s a 1 star job
