On a recent visit to the Lady Lake Historical Museum, located in Log Cabin Park, I happened to meet Tom O'Brien, display coordinator and a member of the Board of the Lady Lake Historical Society and Museum. He spent a lot of time explaining highlights of the museum and its significance to the community. The museum sits behind a log cabin that serves as the office for Lady Lake Chamber of Commerce at the intersection of US 441/27 and Lady Lake Blvd. The museum was originally the Lady Lake train depot and was moved years ago to its current location. Outside, sitting on rails next to the museum, is a full size train car and caboose. Inside the museum are artifacts covering the local Native American history and assorted items depicting the lifestyle of the Pioneer families that settled in this area. A model train exhibit can be found at the back of the museum and depicts Lady Lake and other nearby towns as they were in the 40's. There are also special exhibits which are changed annually. Tom O'Brien served as coordinator for the current WWII display. Most of those artifacts were collected from local WWII vets and their families. Of special note is a wonderful Liberty Bell quilt that was made by a veteran, Mike Tobiasson. The design is constructed from military chevrons collected one by one from former active duty members of all branches of service and some additional badges as well. It took Tobiasson fifteen years to put the quilt together. The entire WWII display will be coming down over the summer to be replaced with Florida Crackers and Cowboys in September. The museum is located at the original town center, where other historic buildings still exist. A farmer's market is held in the park every Tuesday. This is a great place to visit to learn about the very interesting history of Lady Lake. Be sure to check it out.
