Elk River Police Department

My soon to be 2 year old accidentally locked himself in the bathroom and my husband was gone. Although we had installed children's safety door handle protectors on the outside we failed to do so on the inside. I did not think my son could reach high enough to hit the lock but I was sadly wrong. Dispatcher was kind and K-9 Officer Heldt responded swiftly. Our place was a DISASTER after the holidays! I was going through tubs for garbage and donation, toys were everywhere, dirty dishes in the sink, laundry to be folded, and the whole counter covered in items from Christmas, plus a dog mess on a puppy pad! Officer Heldt was polite, thought to not bring the K-9 Duke in to not scare my son, and even got out of my son's range of sight to not upset him, when Officer Heldt was able to open the bathroom door for me to see my son and for my son to know he was now safe! Officer Heldt even showed our son pictures of his K-9 Duke with Santa! What Officer Heldt doesn't know is this MaMa threw her back out two days ago and that I have an autoimmune health issue, our son is the result of a long battle with infertility, and that we are currently trying to give our son a sibling! I feel like a terrible mother and know this could have turned out tragically. Officer Heldt was not judgey and calmed both Mom and Son down. Our Officers need to know how much they mean to us and are appreciated! Officer Heldt and his Canine Duke both deserve an award and a raise! The dispatch woman whoever she is, seems to always be argumentive and unhelpful when I call. She cuts me off gets attitude with me. Shame on you for employing such an icky person to deal with the public during an emergency situation
