I had just the best time here. The signs are fantastic, both the breadth of styles and the types of sign on display. And what I loved most was the history behind it. The museum doesn’t just display the signs, it talks about the trends in signs at the time, as well as the specific circumstances of the sign in question. I also liked getting to see the sign restoration work in progress. Very worthwhile if you’re at all a fan of Americana.
My husband and I loved it! It was so cool seeing some of the old signs we grew up with, and as a graphic designer, it had a special place in my heart revisiting the history of the progress of signs. For my 15yo, however, they breezed through, not reading placards, finishing early and then being bored. That's how teens can be sometimes, though, so I didn't let it dampen my excitement about the experience. Also, there is a really cute little gift shop.
Very interesting museum! Make sure you read all of the placards because there are many tiny details about the signs that you may miss. The pictures of this place don't do it justice and if you are lucky enough to go on a day when they are making or restoring signs you will be able to watch through the windows into their workshop. We went to The Turf Club for lunch afterwards and found it was the perfect place to eat since they have a ridiculous amount of neon signs.
I was expecting a bit more when it came to the amount of signs… but it's been done really well! All you have to do is go to the website and then plug in your headphones to your phone. It gives a really well done self guided tour! Lots of good explanations and picture taking! Well done ASM, well done.
I really didn't know what to expect when I decided to stop by the American Sign Museum but I couldn't have asked for a better experience! They have an amazing collection of signs with something to interest everyone in your group. I really appreciated the attention to detail in their store front displays and how knowledgeable and friendly the staff is. I will definitely be going back!
