Absolutely fantastic! If you're a train nerd you definitely need to visit.
This is an awesome museum with a fun gift shop and caring staff. The little train ride outside of the museum is so much fun. Go on a great day and have a view of an active train ine while exploring beautifully restored and well cared for train cars and an engine or two. ;) I highly recommend!
If you like trains this a good stop for you. You are able to go inside a steam and diesel locomotives couple caboose restaurants and sleep cars. I thing they are in a process to add more cars but they have to restore it first. A nice hall with Lionel trains sadly not running but it is Covid-19 times... a lots of history a small train ride for kids etc....
There are two engines that you can sit in the conductors seat which was cool, there's also a caboose, a baggage car and a dining car that were all nice too. The passenger car and the sleeper car give you a perspective of space but the sleeper car is pretty gross. There really is no direction given when you buy your ticket and just have to find your own way around. It would be nice if there was at least an audio tour available. The saving grace of our visit was one of the guys that works there showed up as we were leaving and talked to us, answered some of our questions and told us some stories. If he started us out I would probably up this to 3 out 5 stars but wandering around trying door knobs with some uncertainty as to whether we were supposed to be there or not made for an unenjoyable experience.
We stopped by on a Sunday near 1pm. There were a few local guys tinkering around and hanging out. The museum was closed. I would say call ahead to let someone know you are coming so they can show you around. There are some beautiful and interesting locomotives there, and you can probably get into the cabs if you call ahead. It looks like CSX has put a lot of money into this small little museum.
